Learn Anywhere FAQs

How much will Learn Anywhere cost?

The monthly cost will depend on many factors, including: the equipment selected, the terms of the agreement, the number of students, whether or not the school has a grant, and so on. However, as an example, a £500 laptop may cost in the region of £20 per month, or £4.60 per week, including insurance and our payment collection service.

Who is actually responsible for the equipment: the school or the parents?

The school has ultimate responsibility for the equipment, which ensures that it retains a level of control over the software loaded on the device.

Can I use Learn Anywhere for the whole school?

The number of pupils and classes you provide laptops for is up to you. However in our experience, schemes rolled out one year at a time achieve sustainable success.

Will you carry out credit checks on parents?

No, all parents can take part in the scheme irrespective of financial status.

How can I convince parents that this is a good idea?

Syscap will help you encourage buy-in to your Learn Anywhere scheme by working with you to position it with parents. Here’s what the e-Learning Foundation recommends.

Can I protect pupils from unsuitable material?

Yes. As the school leases the laptops, you have control over what software and programmes they contain. You can also include parental control to stop students accessing certain websites. Your supplier will advise you further.

Is there a danger of viruses coming into the school?

Your supplier will also advise you on what security measures – virus protection software, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, and so on – will keep your laptops and school network safe from harm.

What happens when the agreement period ends?

Learn Anywhere is all about educational excellence in the long-term rather than the short-term. Once the agreement is complete, there are still numerous options available to your school.

Can parents use the laptops?

Of course. In fact part of the Learn Anywhere ambition is to provide greater access to the wider community. However we encourage parents to give their children priority use of the device.

Do you recycle old computers?

We will remove and recycle your existing PCs for you. We are in the process of forming a partnership with the Carbon Trust to make sure we do this in a carbon neutral way. Watch this space.

Will I need to upgrade my infrastructure?

With more computers running on your infrastructure wirelessly, you may indeed need to upgrade your network. But we recommend that schools approach Learn Anywhere slowly, one year at a time to ensure that you have both the time and budget available to invest in your infrastructure, bit by bit.

Is the aim to get rid of the desktop computers?

Desktop PCs are extremely inflexible. They can’t be moved from class to class or taken home. We would suggest that your ultimate aim should be to replace desktops with laptops and we’ll help you create a strategy that will make this happen – we’ll even take them away for you. But of course the final decision is up to the school.
